Can Your Jewelry Go in an Ultrasonic Cleaner? Check Every Part

Before putting jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner, identify the materials, any treatments and the way the piece is assembled. A stone that tolerates the machine does not make its setting, decorative accents or cord suitable too. If an important detail is unknown, leave the piece out until its maker or a jeweler can advise on that complete item.

What happens inside the tank?

Ultrasonic cleaners send high-frequency sound through water or a cleaning solution. The action loosens dirt in places that are difficult to reach by hand, but it also exposes the jewelry to vibration, liquid and potentially heat. Those conditions matter to both the stones and their connections.

Check the stone and its treatment

GIA advises against ultrasonic cleaning for organic gems such as pearls and amber, and for several other materials including turquoise, opal and topaz. It also warns about stones with filled surface-reaching fractures or certain coatings and impregnations. A familiar gemstone name is only the beginning of the check.

Even diamond needs that distinction. A fracture-filled diamond contains material added to improve its appearance; cleaning can affect the filling. A list that simply says “diamond: safe” leaves out information that can change the answer.

Ask about the particular stones in your piece. A photograph or a hardness number cannot establish their treatment history. For the broader material questions, see how to read jewelry material descriptions.

Follow the connections beyond the main stone

Look at the whole assembly: small set accents, plated fittings, carved details and the stringing between beads. GIA notes that ultrasonic vibration can loosen gemstones or damage stones set with their edges touching. An uncertain fixing method or an already loose part needs a closer assessment before cleaning.

For FEIFEI, the main strand is 8.4 mm agarwood, with a green focal detail, 18K gold-plated brass spacers and an elastic cord. A cleaning chart for loose gemstones does not answer how that wooden, plated and strung combination should be handled. Follow instructions for the bracelet rather than testing it in the tank.

Ask for an answer about the complete piece

Send the product name, material list and clear photographs to the maker or repairer. Ask whether ultrasonic cleaning is suitable for that assembled item and whether its current condition needs inspection first. If the method is approved, follow the instructions for the jewelry and the particular machine, including the specified solution and cycle.

Ordinary surface care has its own place in the material-by-material care guide; a loose or damaged connection belongs with a repair check.
