Natural-material jewelry arranged with a soft cloth for routine care

Jewelry Care by Material: Stone, Wood, Amber and Plating

Good jewelry care starts by asking what the piece is made from. A bracelet that combines stone, wood, plating and elastic should be cared for according to the most delicate part.

Stone is not one care category

Agate and quartz are relatively durable, while turquoise is softer and may be more porous. Malachite needs protection from acids and harsh chemicals.

Use the actual stone as the guide instead of one cleaning rule for every gem.

Wood prefers dry, gentle care

Agarwood, sandalwood, walnut and Huanghuali should be kept away from prolonged soaking, steam and strong cleaners.

A soft dry cloth is usually enough for ordinary surface care.

Amber scratches easily

Amber is much softer than most stone jewelry. Keep it away from harder beads, high heat, alcohol, perfume and ultrasonic cleaning.

Store it separately when possible.

Turquoise and cosmetics are a poor combination

Perfume, lotion, sunscreen and other products can affect porous or treated turquoise over time.

Put jewelry on after cosmetics have dried and remove it before swimming or showering.

Plated metal benefits from less friction

Repeated rubbing, sweat and chemicals can shorten the life of a plated finish.

Wipe the surface gently after wear and store the piece so metal parts are not constantly scraping against harder materials.

Water is not a universal yes or no

Some stones tolerate brief contact with water well. A mixed piece may still contain cord, wood, adhesive or plating that does not.

When the construction is mixed, removing jewelry before showering or swimming is the safer habit.

Storage is part of care

Separate softer materials from harder stones. Fasten chains before storing them. Let damp cord dry before closing it inside a box.

A few simple habits prevent more damage than aggressive cleaning ever will.
